Genetic Testing

For many years I have been concerned about my risk of developing breast cancer. This stems from my mother’s diagnosis of breast cancer over 10 years ago. As a result of my mother’s history I have been advised to be vigilant regarding breast exams and annual check ups. I eat well and I exercise but surely there is a lot more that I could be doing too?

During the course of this year I was introduced to a new concept in healthcare, genetic testing. I attended the initial training on genes specifically related to sporting performance. That’s when the bug bit and I began my Geneway journey. The technology involved in genetic testing has now been developed to the point where it can be made available to the public. This is in the form of SNP genotyping. SNP stands for single nucleotide polymorphisms. These are the DNA sequence variations that make you different from everyone else you know. Once you have a breakdown of your SNPs, a trained technician can interpret the data to tell you which diseases you are likely to get. You will also be able to establish your ideal eating plan and exercise regime based on your unique genetic profile.

Although we cannot change our genes, we can control their expression, which is strongly influenced by our environment. Therefore by making minor adjustments to your lifestyle now, you will be able to lower the risk of certain diseases and live a healthier life.

There are 4 main panels of genetic testing that can be done. You can also do the GeneCombo test which is all 4 of these in 1. This is what I opted for and at the time I was tested for the 60 main SNP’s. Since then Geneway has launched a new double-the-size 120 SNP GeneCombo™ Test.

This came into effect on the 1st of October 2018 and there will be no price change until the end of 2018. So I can offer you the new 120 SNP GeneCombo™ at the price of the 60 SNP GeneCombo™ , until the 20th of December 2018. The price is R4,542.50.

The prices for the individual tests, that contain now many more genes, will also remain the same until the 20th of December 2018.

The GENEWAY™ tests and prices are as follows:

1. GENEDIET™ R3,220         Read more here: Geneway GeneDiet
